Implementing the integrated newsroom: models and tools for successful change

Introduction: Along with the fact that new technologies have opened up for new ways of communication, the media consumers have also changes their habits.

Traditional newsrooms can often struggle with meeting the demands and expectations of their constantly shifting audience. The questions is now: what will future newsrooms look like and how could they work?

If your company stands before reorganisation and you will be part of, or lead the project - then this is a training for you!

This one-day workshop will include:

  • Examples of multi channel newsrooms with varying levels of integration from around the world
  • New newsroom models for cross title reorganisation and sharing of resources
  • Exercises designed to examine issues on changing workflows, structures, roles and responsibilities
  • Examples of approaches to managing editorial change: strategic, cultural and psychological change
  • Lessons learnt and principles for leading newsroom transformation

Outcome: The participants will leave with a deeper understanding and knowledge of how to plan and guide their newsroom through the change process.

More about the topic: In the newspaper industry everyone is talking about the reasons why newspaper publishers need to start creating and distributing content across a variety of digital platforms. However more information and support is needed when it comes to transforming newsrooms and implementing complex change processes within editorial.

One of the major stumbling blocks facing editorial management is working out the strategy and roadmap for changing from a print centric operation to handling continuous online deadlines and marrying print copy with multimedia content. These significant shifts in the daily business of newsrooms throw up issues connected with changes to workflow, activities, roles and responsibilities, shift patterns, technology, training and changing and established culture of a newsroom. Many newsrooms find it difficult to get these type of changes off the ground and to sustain them long term.

WAN-IFRA Newsplex has worked with newsrooms around the world in handling these situations and now offers a one day workshop which focuses on supporting editorial management involved in transforming their newsrooms either now or in the future.

Target group: management executives, newsroom management, and those leading newsrooms multimedia/convergence projects within editorial.

Trainer: Sarah Schantin Williams MA is a senior consultant, experienced media trainer and researcher for WAN-IFRA Newsplex. Sarah has an academic background in Anthropology and specifically focuses on media organisations going through difficult transformational processes. With her professional background in change management in a variety of sectors, Sarah provides support particularly to newsrooms that struggle with resources to manage cross-title and cross-channel workflow and cultural change. Her most recent project saw the successful change process of over 60 titles within one UK regional publishing house over the period of two years.
