Marc Lavine is Agence France-Presse’s (AFP) Editor-in-Chief for the Asia-Pacific region, based in Hong Kong, a post he has held since late 2012.  

He was previously AFP’s Sydney-based bureau chief for Australia, New Zealand and he South Pacific from 2006-2012. Prior to that, he was stationed in Los Angeles for five years as the international agency’s US West Coast bureau chief, covering topics as diverse as Hollywood, politics, earthquakes and private space missions.

Lavine started out as a newspaper and regional news agency reporter in Britain before going on to work as a foreign correspondent in Hong Kong, Afghanistan, South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and the United States. He has covered stories ranging from wars and coups to financial crises entertainment and lifestyle.

He was born in Zimbabwe, raised and educated in South Africa, where he studied Law and European languages at university. He continued his law studies in France before moving to Britain where he launched his journalism career.
