WIN kick-started the year with a National Gathering and Round Table on gender bias in the media that took place on 16-17 January in Lusaka, Zambia. The event was held in presence of the Zambian Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Mulenga Kampamba, and generated publicity in local press, radio, and television. The minister’s presence at the meeting in Zambia was not a first time occasion. A similar cooperation with the government has already taken place in Botswana.

WAN-IFRA in partnership with Sida is pleased to announce the launch of nominations for the Women in News Editorial Leadership Award. The award recognises an exemplary contribution of an Editor to her newsroom and under her leadership, the contribution of her newspaper to society. Two women in 2017 will be recognised as leaders, one being from sub-Saharan Africa and one from the Middle East and North Africa region.

WAN-IFRA’s Women in News: Gender and Media Freedom Strategy looks back at its first year of success, as it pursues its goals set within the 4-year initiative. Through capacity building and advocacy, the programme aims to increase women’s involvement within their media companies as well as ensure gender equality is at the forefront of the media landscape.
