Bahraini videographer and citizen journalist Ahmed Ismail Hassan Al Samadi died earlier this week after being shot while covering a protest in the village of Salmabad, southwest of Manama.

The 22-year old was shot in the upper right thigh while filming pro-reform protests last Saturday. According to news reports, Al Samadi was wounded by unidentified assailants in a Toyota Land Cruiser who began shooting live ammunition at the protesters. Al Samadi's death due to complications from his injury was later announced at Salmaniya Hospital.

"Al Samadi, who had been filming protests in Salmabad since the country's uprising began in February 2011, was well-known among journalists for documenting unrest", Adel Marzooq, president of the London-based Bahrain Press Association, told Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Inspired by events in Tunisia and Egypt, the people of Bahrain took to the streets on 14 February, 2011 demanding change. More than a year after protests began on Pearl Roundabout, the epicentre of the Bahraini revolution, many argue that little has changed for the better. For the press, this sentiment is echoed most acutely.
