    Eight senior journalists from Women in News Africa were selected to take part in a special 'training of trainers' workshop in digital story-telling to support the WIN Future Leaders initiative, which matches current Women in News participants and graduates with journalism students for mentoring as well as skills development activities.     In partnership with Fundamendios and AEDEP, WAN-IFRA brought together 20 Ecuadorean editors in Quito on 31st January to elaborate a common strategy that, it is hoped, will turn back a decade of limitations on freedom of expression under President Rafael Correa. General elections were held in Ecuador on 19th February, and there is renewed optimism that the new government will reconstitute media freedoms in the country. Read more ...

    WIN kick-started the year with a National Gathering and Round Table on gender bias in the media that took place on 16-17 January in Lusaka, Zambia. The event was held in presence of the Zambian Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Mulenga Kampamba, and generated publicity in local press, radio, and television. The minister’s presence at the meeting in Zambia was not a first time occasion. A similar cooperation with the government has already taken place in Botswana. Read more ...

    Somali media women attending the WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) capacity building programme in Nairobi, Kenya have been challenged to learn to tell impactful stories. Winding up the training for the media women, lead trainer, Paula Fray, told the journalists that it was not enough to have more women in senior positions in media houses. The women should begin to explore the potential of telling impactful stories in order to make a difference. Read more ...

    WAN-IFRA in partnership with Sida is pleased to announce the launch of nominations for the Women in News Editorial Leadership Award. The award recognises an exemplary contribution of an Editor to her newsroom and under her leadership, the contribution of her newspaper to society. Two women in 2017 will be recognised as leaders, one being from sub-Saharan Africa and one from the Middle East and North Africa region. Read more ...

    48 journalists were killed in 2016 because of their profession, according to the latest statistics from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). When killings with the motive "so far unconfirmed" are included, the number is significantly higher: 78 media workers who lost their lives in the course of the year. The majority of them were local journalists reporting in conflict zones and covering stories such as war, politics, corruption or human rights. Read more ...
