Martin Schibbye

Martin Schibbye

Journalist, Sweden

Journalist Martin Schibbye stands on the shoulders of journalists before him who have put their lives at risk to tell the stories of war and corrupt governments. Martin, a Swedish journalist, was arrested in Ethiopia in 2011 while on assignment investigating reports of human rights abuse. He was imprisoned for 14 months under an anti-terrorism law. The reportaage about oil was transformed into a story about ink, and his daily life turned into a 438 day long fight for survival inside the notorious Kality prison in Addis Ababa. After being released Schibbye wrote a book about his experience ” 438 days" and returned to work as a freelance writer in 2013.  He has founded the Kality Foundation that works with improving the safety of freelance journalists and supporting colleagues in jail.
