Summary

ANPA/TEC was held from 11th to 15th June 1988 in Atlanta, Georgia. With more than 300 exhibitors and an exhibition floor space of about 31,000 m2, this year’s event was once again bigger than those of previous years. Although the number of visitors (over 12,000) did not quite equal the record result of the year before, it was on the scale expected. The main theme of the conference accompanying the exhibition was Publishing Chal- lenges. In a novel move, the initial letters of this title were taken also as the headings for the individual conference topics: PCs - Perceptive Concepts, PCs - Personal Computers, PCs - Press Considerations. We wish to reproduce here two remarkable statements that were made during the opening session. Firstly, in his welcoming address, Mayor Andrew Young, who is also a former American Ambassador to the United Nations, pointed out that Georgia, and Atlanta in particular, is one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.A. It was with a certain pride that he claimed that Georgia is the only American state to have a positive trade balance with Japan. He also stated that, in recent years, Atlanta has made more investments than the entire EC together, with the result that 500,000 new jobs have been created. However, he did not disguise the fact that, despite such good results, problems continue to exist concerning tmemployment and the homeless. One of the main reasons for this is quite simply that a &eat many persons are attracted by the success of the region and not enough favourably-priced accommodation can be built fast enough.
