Publish “white space” on the front page of your newspaper on 3 May as a symbol highlighting the importance of a free press and the public’s right to know.

This year, WAN-IFRA encouraged member associations to contribute to our 3 May package with ideas, suggestions and materials that would be appropriate in local markets.

One of the suggestions to be sent to us was the notion of publishing “white space” to complement the WAN-IFRA 3 May materials such as editorials, cartoons, photos and infographics.

Board members of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association of Australia have agreed to publish “white space” on the front page of their newspapers on 3 May as a symbol highlighting the importance of a free press and the public’s right to know.

This idea has been followed up by a major paper supplier, which has said that any newspaper working within the industry framework who takes part in the “white space” initiative will receive a credit for that page of paper.

Perhaps your company or association would like to follow the NPA’s lead by joining the “white space” initiative and negotiating with your paper supplier.

Mark Hollands, Chief Executive
, Newspaper Publishers’ Association (Australia) says:

“Our board is very keen to publish WAN-IFRA materials on 3 May and take part in the “white space” initiative.  It’s a very generous offer from our newspaper supplier to support World Press Freedom Day in this way and we encourage other national associations to do the same”.
