The order from the leading Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times is for new control systems on 12 of their MEG reelstands at their Shah Alam printing site just outside Kuala Lumpur. The new control systems will be based on ABB’s AC500 PLC and local operation of the reelstands will in future use ABB’s CP635 touchscreen. The new reelstand controls will be integrated with the original ABB DP800-based press control system on the KBA Commander presses.

The order from the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung is for two further phases of a step-by-step retrofitting of the press control systems on their Wifag OF790 press line consisting of two stacked pairs of 10 cylinder printing units and two folders. In the first of the two new phases the original DP800-based printing tower controls will be transferred new AC500 systems. At the same time touchscreens from ABB’s CP600 series will be introduced for local operation and the existing inker drives will be replaced by modern ABB ACSM1 drives.

In a second phase the decentral I/O modules will be replaced with new I/Os from the AC500 series, an elegant solution that allows the retention of the existing field wiring. In addition new ABB DC drives of type DCS800 will replace the obsolete PAD drives. The commissioning of the two phases is foreseen for the second half of this year.
