Schur System for Automated Registration of Unsold Daily Newspapers helps New Straits Times Press Malaysia to Optimize Production

26.04.2016 – The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) in Malaysia has ordered one automated system for recognition and registration of unsold daily newspapers. The new installed Schur system identifies incoming unsold products and assigns them to the respective reseller. This helps NSTP to optimize future deliveries and avoid costly overproduction.

The registration unit, equipped with a modern camera system, is the heart of the Schur RPS System at the NSTP plant in Selangor.

Modern Camera System for Reliable Recognition
The Schur system consists of a recognition unit, equipped with a modern camera system. The camera system identifies up to 5000 copies per hour by means of stored images. Images for the front pages for all returned copies are compared with all master images - one master image for each edition and date.
Each image, the matching and the statistics are stored in a database. This feature makes it easy for NSTP to verify that the number of returned copies, specified by the vendor, is correct. Also the recognition by bar code will be implemented at a later stage of the project.

Avoiding Overproduction Helps to Protect Important Environmental Resources
“By means of the Schur system, we was able to take the step from manual handling to an automated registration process”, says Mr. Kasmani, General Manager at New Straits Times Press. “The reduction of manual work steps will help us to increase accuracy and productivity while saving time and reducing costs. But above all, avoiding unnecessary overproduction helps to protect important resources. From the environmental point of view is this for us an important step in the right direction”, Mr. Kasmani concludes.
