“We want to integrate learning, creating and engaging, so that people click critically and wisely,” says UNESCO Programme Specialist Alton Grizzle, who manages the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) work of UNESCO.
The result is MIL CLICKS, an acronym that stands for Critical thinking and creativity, Literacy, Intercultural, Citizenship, Knowledge and Sustainability. These are all elements that UNESCO includes in its composite concept of Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
And a new campaign: #UnLockYourMedia.
HOW DOES MIL CLICKS WORK?
Through channels on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others, MIL CLICKS social media strategy aims to engage people to play, learn and use MIL skills, learn how to evaluate information and how to identify and to find credible sources. Activities include sharing posts, tips, solving quizzes, creating content and learning new skills.
“Critical engagement goes hand in hand with encouraging people online to get involved into peace building, dialogue, promote tolerance, diversity, equality and freedom of expression,” says Grizzle.
Supporters of the project include the European Commission, The King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Program for a Culture of Peace and Dialogue, the global media group Dentsu Aegis Network, and the Brazilian research group Cidade do Conhecimento.
MIL CLICKS is being first implemented in English. Other languages will follow in cooperation with local partners. Serbian and Portuguese will be first.
