This workshop will introduce the participants to the best practices in visual journalism so as to broaden their understanding of design and improve the quality of their daily work.

Plus, they will learn how to get the most out of the tools at their disposal such as the grid, typography, and the colour palette, while respecting tradition.

Participants will also get to apply the principles they learn during the workshops in the form of practical sessions. Newspaper’s pages will be analyzed and new design solutions will be discussed. Teams will then work on those ideas and create design prototypes that can be used in the daily work routine. At the end of the exercise, teams will present their pages and receive constructive and valuable feedback from the trainer.

On successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to make every day a special day, and show how to stand out in the daily news flow.

Note: Participants must bring their laptop for hands-on exercises and copies of their newspaper of the previous week.

Workshop Leader:

Lucie Lacava is a design consultant and a past president of SND (2001). She is a founding member of the francophone chapter of SND, based in Paris.  She was a design director at the The Gazette newspaper before founding her company Lacava Design Inc., a firm offering visual strategies for print and digital media. Since then, she has given visual personality to more than 100 publications across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates. She has received more than 100 national and international awards in her career, including the SND's “World's Best Designed Newspaper" award for three of her projects.She has given workshops at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, WAN-IFRA, the American Press Institute, and as a visiting faculty member at the Universidad Catolica de Chile. Since 2013 she is a part-time lecturer at l'Université du Québec à Montreal, where she teaches typography and editorial design.
