Lynne Cahill

Manager, The West Australian Newspapers in Education unit

Lynne Cahill is the lead Newspapers in Education (NIE) consultant for The West Australian, where she spent more than 25 years managing that unit. She implemented many changes and growth to the department and currently the school circulation is over 2 million newspapers per calendar year, up from 1 million in 2009.

This figure has continues to steadily grow annually as teachers look to NIE as a practical resource in the classroom. Almost 3,000 teachers a year attend free NIE workshops after-school and during holidays and over 90% of the NIE resources are ordered sight unseen.

Under her continued guidance, the program routinely expands its work beyond straight news in the clas work. In 2013, for example, a "Generation Z" project had students working with the editorial staff in producing the newspaper for West Australian Children’s Week.

As a former primary and secondary teacher, Lynne strongly believes all newspapers delivered to schools must link to the Australian Curriculum and national testing program. As such she combines her knowedge of education and writing and produces teaching cd-roms and student workbooks associated with the circulation project.

With school budgets being very limited, NIE at The West Australian has adopted the path of sponsorship for part of its program. As a result some of the special project teaching packs are available to teachers at no charge and others are at a minimal charge.

The West Australian NIE has twice won a top WAN-IFRA World Young Reader Prize, along with Newspaper Association of America Awards, Pacific Area Newspaper Awards and, in 2012, the INMA (International News Marketing Award) for its Christmas carols community project. She is a member of the WAN-IFRA Young Reader Committee and prize jury.
