Matt DeRienzo is Group Editor of Journal Register Company’s publications in Connecticut, which include three dailies, the New Haven Register, The Middletown Press and The Register Citizen, Connecticut Magazine and 14 weekly newspapers. In December 2010, when he served as publisher of The Register Citizen in Torrington, Connecticut, he opened North America's first Newsroom Cafe, integrated into the newspaper's offices, with no walls between the public and reporters and editors. After taking over as editor in the fall of 2011, he reorganized the New Haven Register’s newsroom around investigative and in-depth reporting, breaking news and community engagement. In February 2012, Journal Register Company’s newspapers in Connecticut launched a comprehensive newsroom training program, the Digital Ninja School, aimed at teaching journalists digital skills.
