Serene’s first contact with her company came at age 13. She wrote a sharply worded complaint to the editor about a tardy bus service that had been causing students in her district to be late for class. Within a week of its publication, the bus operator had replied with some contrition, service frequency had doubled, and her fate was sealed: only a newspaper job, she was convinced, would allow her to make a difference in her immediate community. She has since won four WAN-IFRA World Young Reader Prizes among many other awards for innovation.
