Steve Hills has made a career out of creating successful customer-focused innovation. During his tenure, Steve has developed an extraordinary record of innovations – most successful and some not. He is happy to talk about both. The innovations created under his leadership include:
- Digital Partnership Program – revolutionary business development and marketing program that has boosted awareness of The Washington Post’s digital content by creating partnerships that reach over 7M people.
- Capital Business – the first paid weekly business publication created by any major newspaper in the United States, a success with customers and profits.
- Washington Post Live – a highly successful conference business that extends the Post brand via live events and digital streaming.
- Greater Washington Publishing, a niche Print and Internet publishing operation that became the model for the Newspaper industry.
- express – one of the most successful free distribution commuter publications in the country.
- Post Points –a highly innovative loyalty program that gained 200,000 members in the Washington DMA.
- Washington Post Radio – the only Newspaper/Radio joint venture ever created in the industry.
- And an ever-growing array of Washington Post digital products on a wide variety of platforms.
After earning his M.B.A., Steve joined The Washington Post as a Sales Representative after working as a Summer Intern. He was given increasing responsibility in advertising and marketing before becoming vice president of advertising in 1993, and eventually becoming President and General Manager of The Washington Post in September of 2002.
Steve graduated from Yale University in 1981 and received an M.B.A from Harvard Business School in 1987.
Steve serves as a Director of The Newspaper Association of America (Treasurer, on track to be Chairman in 2016); The Greater Washington Board of Trade; and The Federal City Council.
