Introduction to Event
Canada has a smart approach when it comes to print publishing - thanks to non-traditional business models & the embrace of new products.
Study Tour: Printing in Canada
Join us in Toronto and Montreal and visit publishers and their printing plants where machinery is used with ingenuity to create attractive products and printing capacity is sold out consistently and effectively. In Canada publishers are rethinking the purpose of their paper products and revamping them to stay relevant. These are the next generation newspapers who are not just surviving but extending their reach - looking to build on 300 years of industry reinvention.
Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO of The Globe and Mail, will talk about the lessons learned from the redesign of the newspaper and its websites in October 2010, following the installation of new KBA presses with heatset and coldset capability. He will illustrate with examples the advantage gained in the market from being able to offer advertisers magazine-like printing quality. He will also share some early results from the launch of a metered paywall for digital access to Globe and Mail content in October 2012.
Pascal Cesari, Technical Director, Quebecor Media Printing will also host us. As he says: “One of the reasons for this exceptional dynamism in printing investment is the fierce competition between Transcontinental and Quebecor in Canada. We have certainly made different technology and supplier choices.”
John Cruickshank, Publisher of the Toronto Star and President of Star Media Group, will talk about the pros and cons of the move by many North American newspapers to consider outsourcing their printing operations.
He will be joined by Dean Zavarise, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Torstar Printing Group, which operates the main printing facilities for the Star, who will discuss how a newspaper can also operate as a commercial printing business.
