Tablet & App Summit: New York Times, Aftonbladet offer lessons in mobile news

2014-09-30

With 50 per cent of its traffic now on mobile, the New York Times is testing new advertising formats and attracting a base of both first time users and loyal subscribers.

In Sweden, Aftonbladet Plus has attracted 200,000 paid subscribers and is discovering what can trigger people to pay when they access Aftonbladet on a smartphone.

For news executives seeking strategies for reaching audience and raising revenue via mobile, there is much to learn from these two news organisations. Both are on the programme at the upcoming Tablet & App Summit, to be held on 14 and 15 October during the World News Publishing Expo in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Alexandra Hardiman, Executive Director of Mobile Products at The New York Times, and Sofia Olsson Olsen, Head of Aftonbladet Plus, will take part in a session entitled "Increase Reader Revenue on Mobile."

"We're shifting our culture, process and practices across the organisation so that mobile is no longer downstream from the Web, and is often the first thing we think about," says Ms Hardiman.

The 7th Tablet & App Summit is one of three premium conferences to take place at the World Publishing Expo, the largest global trade exhibition for the newspaper and news publishing industry, organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). Around 250 exhibitors and 8,000 visitors are expected in Amsterdam for the Expo and related events.

There is still time to register: a Media Executive Pass offers admission to the Expo as well as the Tablet & App Summit, the 13th International Newsroom Summit on 13 and 14 October, and the inaugural World Printers Forum on 15 and 16 October. Full details of all the events can be found at http://www.worldpublishingexpo.com.
