Summary

The postal regulations governing newspaper mailing are aimed at facilitating handling of newspapers during transport, sorting and delivery. Distribution-based mailing lists have partly been replaced by single-copy addressing. One reason for this is the advent of edition splitting. However, the postal authorities have also issued regulations concerning the size and the wrapping of the newspapers. These postal regulations vary between different countries. The aim of this Special Report is to give an overview of this type of processing for single copies and small bundles. Problems are described that should be taken into account with the production of such objects. Many factors must be considered when planning an exten- sion or improvement of single copy processing, including the cost-use ratio. The impetus for this Special Report came from the members of the MDC, the IFRA Mailroom and Distribution Committee. We wish at this point to express our special thanks for their support in its compilation, and particularly to the manufacturers who readily made available their documentation.
