The report showcases how both large and small news media companies can thrive in the face of intense digital competition.

The Guardian, BBC, Verdens Gang, Kleine Zeitung, Apple Daily, Dagbladet, and Fairfax Media are the winners in their respective categories of this year’s competition. We went behind the scenes of each winning project to examine how it started, how it was implemented, its impact, and to hear what the people behind each effort had to say.

The winners shared many common traits: excellent ideas and execution and an experimental spirit – while embracing all facets of digital technologies and publishing. Another clear common denominator: their ability to create buzz outside their traditional audiences.

Organizing competitions like this one always brings many excellent case studies to light. All the participants have great stories to tell. As a global organization, WAN-IFRA is constantly engaging with our members to monitor developments around the world, but the awards reveal great experiments that we might otherwise not discover.

This report shares some of those stories – and we are always eager to hear yours.

Learn how to enter our competitions in the Awards area of our site.
