Reducing costs in the printing process isn't the old thing newspapers can do to improve finances, "but we need to do it," says Aurelio Mendiguchía, Technical Director at the Tajamar Institute of Graphics and Technology (ITGT-Tajamar) in Spain, during a conference session dedicated to print production.

Aurelio Mendiguchía

He presented several ways newspapers can go about it, including:

- "Avoid all processes that are not handled by you – everything that comes that is not controlled and makes processes slower will lose time and money."

- "Don't buy a printing machine that is not automatic. We need to be as automatic as possible. The least human interaction as possible. I'm sorry to say that, but we can't deny reality."

- "Reduce the intermediate steps as much as possible. Try to make the shortest process of printing."

- "Standardize to obtain the best results."

- "Educate the technicians. Cost savings are made when people have good training."

Mr Mendiguchía's presentation also covered the latest innovations in printing and mailroom, from scented inks and special papers to post-it notes and other products that can be used to make the newspaper more attractive and help in its marketing.
