October, 2011, Norwalk, CT – Miles 33 is pleased to announce that the Kingsport Times-News, a daily newspaper in Kingsport, Tennessee covering local news, sports, business, jobs and community events, has successfully gone live on their new GN4 publishing system and TARK4 archive system.
Already a user of the previous generation GN3 system, originally purchased from Tera Digital Publishing, the new GN4 suite allows the Times-News to consolidate several disparate systems into one content management solution as well as modernize their web publishing processes.
Wire and a separate archive database have now been integrated into a single data store managed by GN4 and TARK4. Twelve years of published articles, images and pages have been imported into TARK4, retaining the relationships between them, and are integrally available to newsroom staff who can search through and, optionally, re-use previously published material without ever leaving their core editing system.
Publishing to the web, previously a task that required manual steps, has now been totally modernized allowing editors to seamlessly select, edit and route their content to the web from within the GN4 application which automates the conversion and formatting required. This streamlining of digital web content workflow opens up opportunities to pursue new publishing avenues. A new Twitter feed is soon to be brought online, thanks to the enhanced workflow capabilities that enable this without additional effort.
A new module, GNPortal provides an online portal solution for the ingestion and automatic conversion of externally submitted content. Part-time contributors, who previously used a cumbersome e-mail workflow, now can log straight into GNportal and upload or write their submission directly into the system, where it is automatically supplied with the appropriate metadata. Automated workflows ensure the content is routed to the correct location for inclusion in the publication and/or web.
Another benefit derived from the new GN4 system will present itself when winter comes around. Kingsport is frequently hit by severe snow storms and the GN4 system will allow newsroom staff to function from their homes, thus avoiding, sometimes dangerous, trips into the newspaper.
“We're delighted with the capabilities of GN4 - it comes at the opportune time for our strategic plans as regard digital content delivery” said Ted Como, Managing Editor. “GN4 has allowed us to standardize our operations and adopt best practice methodologies” he said.
