10.10.11 - Earlier this month, The Moscow News presented the first installment of a four-book Moscow travel guide by British journalist Phoebe Taplin, who spent several years working as a columnist for this paper. Each book in the “Moscow Walks” series is devoted to a season. In the guide, Taplin takes her readers on a tour of her favorite seasonal places in the Russian capital.

“The whole project grew out of Phoebe’s weekly columns for our newspaper, which ran for four years during her time in Moscow,” Editor-in-Chief Tim Wall said.
Taplin explored some of Moscow’s most exciting corners – new and old – while sharing her discoveries with the paper’s international community of readers.
For the autumn edition, Phoebe has chosen 12 walks around Moscow that are well suited for this time of year.

Among other places, she takes her readers to Tsaritsyno Park, where the sweet smell of honey and the colorful autumn foliage present a feast for the senses. She also invites us to roam the vast fields around Borodino village outside Moscow to admire their reddish gold color.
Taplin also talks about some of Moscow’s most popular leisure spots, and offers a fresh perspective on well-known sites. She suggests visiting the Leo Tolstoy museum estate and taking a pleasure boat trip along the Moskva River before the route is suspended for winter.
Her Moscow travel guide offers tourist routes around the city and one-day trips to places outside it while suggesting theme itineraries that she has personally explored in different seasons.
“We hope the books will be an excellent way for foreigners, and Russians alike, to learn more about Moscow, its rich culture and history,” the author said. Taplin’s walks are incredibly popular among foreigners in Moscow, and many of her friends and acquaintances have walked the routes with her.

The series is published both in English and in Russian, so Russian readers can now also enjoy her walks along with foreigners.

“Writing walks every week for the Moscow News was my dream job,” Taplin said. “For nearly four years I was a professional explorer of Moscow’s most exciting corners, seeking out a new theme […] with an international community of readers.”

The second book, covering the winter season, is set for release in December.
