The coating is applied to the web by a coating unit installed above the printing unit. According to KBA, inline coating in waterless newspaper printing enables the production, even without a dryer, of "short to medium runs of semi-commercials on improved newsprint in top quality, with greater depth, stronger colours and finer texture". There is little to no smearing or set-off, even with thick layers of ink. The coating helps to protect the image from mechanical damage during finishing. Diverse gloss effects can also be achieved, depending on the type of coating and paper used.
