WAN-IFRA has previously staged four successful Arab Free Press Forum events, all of which were hosted in Beirut. Follow the links below for programme information and pictures.
Fourth Arab Free Press Forum
6 & 7 June 2010
The most recent Forum continued the theme of fighting oppressive regimes and unfair press laws, asking how the independent Arab press could fully play its role as a counter-weight to power and an opponent to the abuse of power.
Third Arab Free Press Forum
12 & 13 December 2008
The third Forum addressed new tactics used by governments and the judiciary to impede and sanction the independent press in Arab countries, as well as the increasing political relevance and influence of blogs.
Second Arab Free Press Forum
9 & 10 December 2007
The second Forum was titled "Fighting Back - Challenges and Opportunities for the Arab Press" and provided an overview of the latest press developments in the Arab world, from obstructive government policies to case studies of newspapers that combine editorial independence with commercial success.
First Arab Free Press Forum, WAN-IFRA's 'Press Under Siege Conference'
10 & 11 December 2006
The 'Press Under Siege Conference' explored the efforts of Arab media to win their independence and freedom in an environment of continuing repression and harassment. The event was the latest in a series of WAN-IFRA conferences entitled 'Media in Danger', held in regions where violence against the press has become endemic, and was to become a series of events in its own right, the Arab Free Press Forum.
