The digital imprinting of variable information in newspapers has been tested successfully at the newspaper priinting plant in Ahrensburg, near Hamburg.

This is realised by means of an aggregate, the Kodak System Prosper S30, built into the superstructure of the offset press to imprint variable components (e.g. consecutive lottery numbers, variable QR codes, changing artwork) across a width of up to 10.56 cm at full production speed (up to 15 m per second). Kodak claims that this is the first installation of this system in a newspaper web offset press worldwide.

According to the manufacturer, the water-based pigment inks used are suitabe for printing both coated and uncoated paper grades and permit the reproduction of text, line artwork and solid elements also on newsprint in deep black.
