On 15 February, NP Newsprint Berlin GmbH – a joint venture of IPS Pressevertrieb (Meckenheim) and the local press wholesaler V.V. Vertriebs-Vereinigung – started printing newspapers by the digital process in the German capital.

According to a report published in the latest issue of dnv (der neue vertrieb),  IPS Pressevertrieb is now applying its distribution model for digital newspapers, tried and tested in Italy, in Berlin. The first German digital printing site was established in the V.V. premises V.V. in Berlin-Schöneberg. Technology partners are Kodak (printing) and Hunkeler (finishing). The plant has a capacity to print up to 900, 40-page copies per hour Stunde.

"Digital newspaper printing has the potential to change the newspaper market significantly. What we are seeing now in Berlin will happen in many centres of population in the medium term. Publishers will have a presence outside their core distribution area whenever and wherever it promises to be worthwhile. And thanks to digital printing this is the case already with very short print runs", says Dieter Wirtz, IPS Managing Direcxtor.
