How can a newspaper succeed that, according to the prevailing opinion in the industry, acts in contrary of all rules of rationality – and this just in the U.S.?

The Orange County Register demonstrates – as this interesting article from the Guardian's website describes – how a newspaper is able not only to survive but to thrive by doubling its newsroom staff, raising pagination, prioritising print over digital and establishing a hard Internet paywall.

Aaron Kushner, Freedom Communications’ CEO (owner of the Register), bets on the core, as media analyst Ken Doctor concluded, "core product and core readers.”

Freedom Communications recently relaunched its Irvine World News as a daily newspaper, as described here by OC Register Local Editor Rob Curley on his blog, and is about to launch a new paper, the Long Beach Register. And the company is also reportedly very serious about potentially acquiring the LA Times newspaper group.

Such self-conficence, and more importantly, confidence in both the industry and print, is certainly refreshing these days!
