Circulation revenues up 15% at HMVL
Hindustan Media Ventures (HMVL), publisher of Hindu- stan and Hindustan Times on India, has reported a 5 per cent increase in advertising reve- nues to Rs 4,601 million for the financial year ended March 31, 2013 from Rs 4,392 million last year, primarily due to growth in advertising volumes. Total revenue was up 8 per cent at Rs 6,647 million from Rs 6,158 million last year.

Why the future isn't what it used to be
Around 20 years ago I wrote about what was then an emerg- ing trend of publishers for the first time, “letting go” staff in order to save costs. Much of the “down-sizing” seemed to me to be logical, reflecting changes in technology that led to increased efficiency and effectiveness. Since then we have seen the balance of achieving greater “performance” trans- form into often-desperate measures in a quest for survival.
