News Corp Australia plans to establish a digital printing site in Brisbane to produce small quantities of newspaper editions using inkjet technology to save air freight cost, gxpress.net reports.

According to an article on gxpress.net (by Peter Coleman, Managing Editor of GXpress Magazine), which covers newspaper technology news for the Asian-Pacific region, "News Corp Australia is set to pioneer digital newspaper printing in Australia with a pilot site in Brisbane".

Coleman writes that members of the management Geoff Booth (national production and logistics director) and Curtis Davies (News Corp Australia transformation director) visited key European digital newspaper print sites following the WAN-IFRA World Publishing Expo last October. Among these were Axel Springer in Germany, Centro Stampa Quotindiani (CSQ) in Italy and Halewijn in Belgium.

GXpress reports a number of inkjet web press manufacturers were invited to tender for the project, including Canon/Océ, HP, KBA, Kodak and Screen. "A component in the system may be the inline newspaper finishing system developed by manroland as part of a partnership with Océ, although it is not clear whether this element might be paired with another vendor’s press."

The decision on the system is expected in the next couple of months.
