Morry Schwartz, the publisher of the new weekly paper, says The Saturday Paper will follow a different business model and a new content model. It does not focus on breaking news but covers the news of the week in greater depth.
It is dedicated to narrative, long-form journalism. The publisher's intention is to increase the size of the newspaper market. He describes the physical paper as of high quality, printed on white and thick newsprint in good colour printing, which he considers a perfect vehicle for big advertisement brands. The cover price of the paper is 3 Australian dollars.
The target readership is among the baby boomers and the young. Schwartz sees a tendency with the 20- to 30-year-old to go back to the more traditional forms of news consumption. The paper is edited by Erik Jensen, a 25-year-old journalist.
The print edition is accompanied by an online publication and a mobile app edition.
Schwartz is also the publisher of The Monthly, an Australian national magazine of politics, society and the arts, which is published 11 times per year.
