Archant Print is to become the latest production site in the UK to benefit from a reelstand upgrade after placing an order with control system specialist Harland Simon

14th April 2016 – Having acquired eight sets of reelstand controls from Broughton Printers, Archant have contracted with Harland Simon to upgrade these controls to the latest specification including colour HMI screens. Controls will be integrated into the Goss CT45 reelstands at their Thorpe St Andrew site.

This comprehensive upgrade will eliminate obsolescence by replacing the control electronics with industry standard parts, as well as the belt drive with a thyristor controlled regulator. A new interface on the reelstands will provide additional monitoring and calibration facilities to enable improved diagnostics and fault fining. Further benefits include lower splice and core waste.

As part of the project Harland Simon will replace the obsolete Allen-Bradley SLC plcs on Archant’s Goss HT70 folders with new plcs from the Allen-Bradley Logix range. The controllers will be programmed to replicate the functionality of the old components to ensure a smooth transition and continued performance of the folders.

Clive Want - Director of Thorpe Print Centre said: “We have always enjoyed a good working relationship with Harland Simon.  The obsolescence issues with the CT45 reelstand controls and the controls on the HT70 folders have been apparent for some time and we are looking forward to benefitting from the security that these upgrades will provide.”

David Wallen, Director of Customer Services for Harland Simon commented: “We are delighted to be working with Archant Print again. Our proven upgrade approach enables us to ensure Archant’s reelstands can be future-proofed in the most cost-effective way”.

Harland Simon offers upgrade solutions for a number of reelstands supplied by Goss and other press manufacturers.
