WAN-IFRA and Two Sides cooperate in this project. Two Sides is an initiative by companies from the Graphic Communications Supply Chain.
Their goal is to promote the sustainability of the Graphics Communication Supply chain and dispel common environmental misconceptions by providing users with verifiable information on why print and paper is an attractive, practical and sustainable communications medium.
The draft outline of the project is sketched below:
General myths and facts about paper
Sustainable forestry
Paper recycling
Energy and water consumption in paper making
Specific advantages of newspapers
Low-grammage paper (40 to 45 g/m2), compared to 115 g/m2 for magazine production
Uncoated and unbleached paper, lower energy and less chemistry in paper making
Lower paper waste in production, compared to other print products (2 to 8%)
Coldset (no heatset drying), less energy in print production
Elimination of chemistry in plate making
Recycling of plates, blankets, waste paper
(sorting of waste paper, white waste, printed waste)
Large format product size, small unprinted areas
Low number of return copies due to subscription business model
Sustainability of print vs. digital news
Carbon footprint of the printed newspaper compared to electronic media
What can newspapers do to further improve sustainability?
Reducing energy consumption
Waste reduction programmes
