The Golden Pen of Freedom, the annual press freedom award of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), has been awarded to Dmitry Muratov, Editor-in-Chief of independent Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta.

WAN-IFRA supports the proposal put forward by Reporters Sans Frontiers of creating a special representative of the UN Secretary General for the safety of journalists.

An international delegation of media and freedom of expression organisations, including WAN-IFRA, met with the Indonesian government to discuss the state of media in the country. It highlighted concerns regarding journalist safety and an environment that poses significant threats to freedom of expression after a week-long visit to meet with journalists, civil society and government representatives.
