How is misinformation affecting media and journalists in Zambia? To discuss this topic and propose potential solutions to restore professionalism, the recently created WAN-IFRA Zambia Media Freedom Committee (MFC) organised the country’s first Editors’ Round Table on the 28th of June.

The Board of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), meeting in Durban, South Africa on 7th June, 2017, calls for renewed global solidarity with the Zambian press in the wake of attacks and the hardening government stance against independent, free media.

WIN kick-started the year with a National Gathering and Round Table on gender bias in the media that took place on 16-17 January in Lusaka, Zambia. The event was held in presence of the Zambian Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Mulenga Kampamba, and generated publicity in local press, radio, and television. The minister’s presence at the meeting in Zambia was not a first time occasion. A similar cooperation with the government has already taken place in Botswana.

Three years ago when WIN Graduate Emelda Libanga joined the Women In News (WIN) programme, she was subeditor at the Zambia Daily Mail. Today she is editor of the Sunday Mail, a position that brings about many more challenges and responsibilities, but also the possibility for real impact and change.
