Egypt holds its first Roundtable for Women in News

WAN-IFRA’s Women in News (WIN) programme, funded by Sida, saw its first Roundtable on October 12, bringing together over a dozen editors-in-chief, managing editors, department heads and media directors from Egyptian media in Cairo. Discussions centered around finding ways to improve female journalists’ status in newsrooms, helping women move up the professional ladder and tackling the wider issue of gender bias in Egypt’s media landscape.

Independent Media Company Welad El Balad Under Attack in Egypt

WAN-IFRA has received disturbing reports of an unprecedented public assault against hyper-local Egyptian news company Welad El Balad. Amongst a number of outlandish statements directed towards the organisation and broadcast over a private satellite channel in recent days, the company is accused of being “the agent of foreign powers” and of “working to undermine the Egyptian state.”

Al Jazeera journalist Abdullah al-Shami released from Egyptian jail as others await verdict

After more than ten months in jail without charges, Abdullah al-Shami was released from Cairo’s Scorpion prison on Tuesday 17 June. The Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent was arrested by security forces in August 2013 while covering the violent dispersal of a pro-Morsi sit-in that left hundreds of protesters dead.
