Summary

Newspaper presses are cost-intensive investment items, especially when considering the adjacent mailroom installation as well. Contrary to this, most presses are used only 3 to 4 hours per night which doesn’t fill even a whole working shift. Thus it becomes under- standable that publishers try to get a better usability of their presses by running commer- cial jobs in the periods between newspaper productions. But mostly this needs a better printing substrate, a brighter and smoother paper grade which cannot be printed in the normal press without any precautions against set-off. To find out what these arrangements have to be in a minimum, IFRA together with NATS, the Scandinavian Technical Newspaper Association, in 1986 initiated a research project on the theme: "Improved Print Quality and Higher Usability of Newspaper Presses", which has been carried out at the Research Centre of Finland (VTT), Graphic Arts Laboratory in cooperation with the Graphical Research Laboratory (GFL) in Stock- holm, Sweden and the Laboratory of Heating and Ventilation (LVI) of the VTT in Espoo/Helsinki, Finland. .! This Special Report informs our members about the outcome of the research project by reprinting the original report in a slightly compressed, i.e. more easily readable form. ’
