Summary

One of the most important printing parameters that has to be considered in reproduction is dot gain. Standardisation specifications give the values as percentages with wide tolerances for every processing stage from film-to-print, i.e. as a short summary. How these standard values are to be reached is left mostly for the printer to decide.
