Summary
Some time ago, we completed our IFRA Special Report 4.3 about CSS-Systems, Copy Stream Storage Systems. In this report our approach to the subject was to analyse the different ways of operation and application of the CSS-Systems on the market at that time. However, inserting operations have also been described because inserting and storage systems are two very closely connected functions in a modern mailroom today. Many inserting machines from different suppliers have been available for several years for both off-line and on-line operations and have and are still accomplishing the inserting task without a copy stream storage system being involved. The trend shows, however, that a buffer system for main products between the rotary press and the inserting machines and a storage system for preprints and supplements feeding the inserting hoppers are an accepted way of processing today. In the IFRA Inserting Special Report concerned, the subject under examination is the characteristics of different ways of inserting operation and application including different manners of feeding. Where it is appropriate copy stream storage feeding systems will be mentioned also with reference to our Special Report 4.3. Our inserting report was initiated and written with the help and support of the members of MDC, the IFRA mailroom and distribution committee. A special thank you to the suppliers of the described inserting machines for their assistance and cooperation.
