Summary

Because newsprint is the most important and most expensive raw material for every newspaper, reducing unnecessary newsprint costs is essential to newspapers’ profitability. Remarkable amounts of paper used for newspaper production never turn into saleable copies. A considerable percentage of this newsprint is attributed to "waste" and results from various causes within several raw material handling and newspaper production operations. With elevated newsprint prices and greater demands on production efficiency, the question of how to control newsprint waste has become increasingly important.
