The World Printers Forum (WPF) is an organisation of newspaper printers and suppliers within WAN-IFRA. Its objective is to encourage innovation and productivity as well as product development that can be instrumental for publishers to exploit future oriented news media products. 2017-08-10 09:19August 10, 2017 – California’s Bay Area News Group, owned by Digital First Media, has chosen to upgrade their controls and electronics on the Colorliner press equipment installed in their production facility in Concord, California, to increase production flexibility and improve operational efficiency. Bay Area News Group – printing The Mercury News, East Bay Times, 29 community newspaper titles, and many more – saw the need to make their software and hardware controls components current, due to the need to print multiple daily and weekly newspaper titles. 2017-08-09 10:3009.08.2017 – After a good start to the year in which Koenig & Bauer celebrates its 200th anniversary, the group is able to report favourable business performance in the second quarter of 2017. “The successful trade shows Print China in Beijing, interpack in Düsseldorf and MetPack in Essen contributed to a substantial year-on-year increase in order intake in packaging solutions for cardboard, metal decorating, marking and coding and glass and hollow container printing. Despite this growth and the expansion of service business, the order intake of €601.9m was slightly down on the previous year’s figure of €618.8m, which had been spurred by major security press orders,” explained CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann. With group revenue dropping slightly to €538.9m compared with the previous year due to more deliveries in H2, the order backlog remained high at €620.5m. Read more ...

2017-08-04 10:0504.08.2017 – „Was die Jungs können, können die Mädels schon lange“, nach diesem Motto wollten elf Schülerinnen im Alter zwischen zwölf und 14 Jahren technische Berufe wie Mechatronikerin, Gießerei-, Industrie-, Konstruktions- und Zerspanungsmechanikerin bei Koenig & Bauer in Würzburg kennenlernen. Die Teilnehmerinnen konnten erste praktische Erfahrungen sammeln und erhielten einen Einblick in den Hightech-Druckmaschinenbau. Reinhard Munz, Leiter der Werkberufsschule bei Koenig & Bauer in Würzburg, sagte: „Technische Berufe haben sehr gute Zukunftsperspektiven – auch für Frauen und Mädchen. Mit unserer aktiven Teilnahme am ‚Mädchen für Technik Camp‘ machen wir den Schülerinnen Mut, diese Laufbahnen einzuschlagen. (NYSE: RFP) (TSX: RFP) today reported a net loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2017, of $74 million, or $0.82 per share, compared to a net loss of $42 million, or $0.47 per share, in the same period in 2016. Sales were $858 million in the quarter, down $33 million, or 4%, from the second quarter of 2016. The trend toward consolidation of newspaper printing centres is slowly coming to a halt, says consultant Sabine Sirach. After all, for printed daily newspapers, there are physical limitations to the distribution distances that can be covered while still being up-to-date and relevant.

The International Color Quality Club is the only worldwide printing quality competition for newspapers and magazines. Its goal is to improve the quality of reproduction and printing in production, while also increasing competitiveness as well as training and motivating all personnel.

The Materials Management Database project was launched as a spinoff of the Newsprint and Newsink Guide. Today it is used by printers, pressroom foremen and technical management as an information source for facts and advice for dealing with the materials used in producing newspapers. Among other informaton you find the specification of the WAN-IFRA Bar Code for paper reels in this online database. Most of the entries in the database originate from the members of the Material Management Committee; some come from outside sources (as marked), after review and approval by the committee. This database is continually being updated and expanded. New entries will be marked with a label in red type.
