2018-08-31 20:10Würzburg, 28.08.2018 – ColdsetInnovation Fulda has been printing two newspaper titles for a customer in China since the beginning of the year. The newspapers are produced for the Scandinavian region, the Benelux coun-tries and Germany. “Our Chinese partners are very demanding when it comes to newspaper quality. Our Commander satellite press’ register accuracy, extremely low fan-out and minimal makeready times tipped the scales in our favour,” says Siegfried Wahl, assistant vice-president and technical director at ColdsetInnovation Fulda. And, contrary to the general trend, the circulation of both news-papers (Berlin format) has increased by more than 10 percent this year. The trend toward consolidation of newspaper printing centres is slowly coming to a halt, says consultant Sabine Sirach. After all, for printed daily newspapers, there are physical limitations to the distribution distances that can be covered while still being up-to-date and relevant.

The newspaper industry is under pressure globally. While in the West, decline of the newspaper has been rapid, in the East, newspapers will probably survive for longer. However, there are several pressures on the newspaper industry in the East as well – competition from digital readership, increasing input costs, reducing advertising spends, and so on. In such a scenario, it is important for newspaper industry players to collaborate to improve internal operational efficiencies across the industry. Through such an effort the overall industry will stand to benefit. With this objective in mind, an industry-wide benchmarking exercise was carried out to identify specific improvement opportunities across players. The result has been extremely encouraging. This report details out the methodology and findings of this benchmarking exercise.
